Early November in central Arkansas is a sweet spot. We’re still getting mild afternoons, but cooler nights are on the way, and your heating system is about to start working every day. If your furnace, heat pump, or package unit has been with you a long time, this is a good moment to take an honest look at it, before the coldest weeks of winter make the decision for you.
Repair or replace? It’s not always obvious
Plenty of older systems keep running fine with good maintenance, and a repair is often the right call. But there comes a point where putting more money into an aging system stops making sense. The goal is to figure out where yours is, on your own timeline, instead of on a freezing night when the heat quits.
Signs your system may be near the end
- Repairs keep piling up: If you’ve called for service several times in the last couple of seasons, the repairs may be adding up faster than the system is worth.
- Your energy bills keep creeping up: When your bills rise even though your habits haven’t changed, an older system may be working harder to do the same job.
- Some rooms never get comfortable: Hot and cold spots, weak airflow, or a system that runs and runs without catching up can point to equipment that can’t keep up anymore.
- New noises or smells: Banging, grinding, squealing, or a burning smell that doesn’t fade are worth a look, especially on an older unit.
- More dust and stuffy air: An older system may not move or filter air the way it used to.
- You don’t know how old it is: If the system came with the house and nobody remembers when it was installed, it’s worth having someone check it out.
A note on package units
Many homes around Little Rock have a package unit, where the furnace and the air conditioner are combined in one cabinet that sits outside, with the ductwork running under the house. Because the heating and cooling share one cabinet, a replacement takes care of both at once. It’s also a good time to have the ductwork looked at, since leaky or damaged ducts can waste the comfort you’re paying for.
Why it pays to plan ahead
Nobody wants to shop for a new system with the house getting colder by the hour. When you plan ahead, you have time to ask questions, compare options, and pick the system that fits your home and budget. You also get to schedule the installation at a time that works for you, instead of taking whatever is open during a cold snap.
