After the Winter Storm: HVAC Checklist for Little Rock Homes

If your home made it through the storm, that’s a win. But after temps drop well below freezing, a lot of HVAC problems don’t show up until the thaw or the first “back to normal” day.

Outdoor unit should be keep free of heavy snow.
Outdoor units should be kept free of heavy snow accumulation to ensure proper functionality and avoid potential damage.

Here are the big things to check after a winter storm and deep freeze (HVAC Checklist for Little Rock Homes)

1) Check your outdoor unit (heat pump homes)

If you have a heat pump, ice buildup can be normal during extreme cold. But after the storm, the unit should go back to normal operation.

What to look for:

  • A clear area around the unit (no snow, leaves, branches, trash)

  • No solid block of ice that won’t melt

  • No loud grinding, buzzing, or rattling

Good rule: If the unit is still covered in thick ice long after temperatures are above freezing, it’s time to call.

2) If you smell something “burning,” don’t panic immediately

When heat kicks on after a period of heavy use (or after being off), you may smell dust burning off. That’s common and usually goes away quickly.

Call us if:

  • The smell is strong and doesn’t fade after a short time

  • You see smoke

  • The system shuts off or trips the breaker

3) Pay attention to airflow and uneven rooms

After a freeze, we often see:

  • Weak airflow

  • One side of the house colder than the other

  • The system running nonstop but not catching up

That can point to airflow restrictions, a struggling blower, or issues that were “hanging on” before the storm and finally got pushed over the edge.

4) Change your air filter

During storms, systems tend to run harder and longer. A dirty filter can make everything worse.

If you don’t remember the last time it was changed, start there. It’s the simplest and cheapest way to help your system breathe again.

5) Watch for “short cycling”

If your system turns on and off repeatedly in short bursts, that’s not normal. It can wear components out fast and usually means something needs attention.

6) If you had frozen pipes or water damage, protect the HVAC too

If any part of the home had water issues, keep an eye out for:

  • Water near the furnace or air handler

  • Wet ceiling registers

  • Drips in the utility area

Moisture and HVAC equipment don’t mix. If you suspect water contact, it’s better to check it sooner rather than later.
